This image shows the front panel of the Model SPLL
Illumination Source. Click on the image for a larger version. The Model SPLL
Illumination Source is housed in a single full width (16.73 inches wide X 6 inches high X
18.7 inches deep) rack mountable chassis. For a more general discussion of this
product, refer to our Product Overview page.
Overview
- The Model SPLL Illumination Source uses a Phase-Locked-Loop (PLL) control design in
order to provide precise timing and the ability to synchronize a filter wheel to external
events.
- This illumination source does not require a computer.
- The S48A can use an internal frequency reference for filter wheel speed control, or it
can be set to synchronize to an external frequency. This illumination source is ideal for
multicolor video imaging applications since the filter wheel can be easily synchronized to
a camera's Vertical SYNC pulse.
- A digital output signal is provided to indicate the position of the filter wheel. This
output provides a convenient means to interface the source to a variety of data collection
systems.
Specifications
Two modes of control
- Internal
- Filter aperture periods can be selected using a selection dial (fixed speeds) or a
potentiometer (variable speed adjustment). In the fixed speed mode, apertures of 1 (eight
filter wheel only), 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 milliseconds can be selected.
- Jitter of the actual aperture time is less than 0.4% (RMS) of the set value over the
entire speed range.
- External
- An external digital input is provided for external control of the filter wheel. A 0 to 5
volt TTL level frequency input is used as the reference frequency for the PLL control.
- Jitter between actual filter wheel position and the reference signal is less than 0.4%
(RMS) of the reference frequency period.
- Thumbwheel dials are provided to adjust the phase delay between the filter wheel and
reference frequency. Resolution is 0.7 degrees over 351 degrees of the filter wheel.
Adjustable phase angle
- The phase angle relation between the external trigger input and the filter wheel can be
adjusted using the thumb wheel setting on the front control panel.
- The range of phase angle adjustment is 350o of arc.
Accessible filter wheel
- The filter wheel is easily removed from Model SPLL to make rapid filter wheel changes
possible.
- Additional filter wheels can be purchased and configured for special wavelength
combinations.
Internal Shutter
- An internal shutter is provided.
- The shutter can be controlled either manually via a switch located on the front panel or
remotely via an external TTL level input.
150W or 300W xenon arc lamp
- Replacement lamp is a prealigned unit.
- Light output is from approximately 250 to 700 nm.
Digital display of Aperture Period
- The front panel contains a digital display of the aperture period. Display resolution is
0.01 milliseconds.
Position monitor outputs
- TTL level signals provided to indicate filter wheel position. Either 4 or 8 decoded
outputs (depending on the filter wheel used) are available on a female DB-25 connector.
- A frequency output provided to indicate time point of filter transitions.
- These outputs can be used to synchronize the filter wheel to data acquisition systems or
to other external events.
