Model VC-LFR Vacu-CellOverview

Several of our customers have generously evaluated our laminar flow chambers for use in shear stress experiments.  Below are some of their comments.  If you would like to contribute comments to this page, please send them to use using our contact form

  1. The Vacu-CellTM Round Series Perfusion Chamber (Model VC-LFR-25) fabricated from clear acrylic with a 0.1 mm gap distance between chamber bottom and glass slide was tested in several experiments in our laboratory. Smooth muscle cells were plated on 75 x 38 mm, 1 mm thick glass slides, which were sealed to the perfusion chamber via the vacuum port. Cell culture media, at a flow rate of 3.5 ml/min (supplied by a syringe pump), was introduced and removed through the chamber’s entrance and exit ports, respectively. The perfusion chamber with glass slide attached was mounted on an inverted microscope and cell behavior in response to fluid flow shear stress was examined for 30 minutes. Assuming fully-developed laminar flow between infinite parallel plates, this flow rate, when coupled with the appropriate dimensions of the perfusion chamber, exposed the cells to 25 dyn/cm2 shear stress. Experiments provided results similar to those obtained using a different model perfusion chamber under similar conditions (exposure to 25 dyn/cm2 shear stress). No difficulties were encountered during experimental use of the perfusion chamber. The chamber seems novel in design and practical for a range of applications similar to that described here.

Vacuum Pump System (Model VCS-1)

Model VCS-1 Vacuum PumpWe also offer a Vacuum Pump system for use with these perfusion chambers. The pump draws a vacuum of approximately -20 inches Hg and it fitted with a Luer-lock port for easy connectivity to standard tubing systems.  The Model VCS-1 vacuum pump assembly is approximately 8.4 (width) x 8.0 (depth) x 5.8 (height) inches in size.  These perfusion chambers also work well with other standard laboratory vacuum supplies.
